I’m not sure why Play Town doesnt have an actual story yet. I feel like it has always been there, but now all of a sudden I’m starting to see what it can be - maybe allways has been! I’ve been puzzling with creating a story more and more, and so when @juliakuentzel mused that she’d like to create a fairytale with tiles - a fairy tile? It was very easy to jump in and create! And so we did this week. Which was awesome. Julia has a way of story telling that I love and eagerly try to understand. She somehow understands that a picture of a keyhole is more curiosity invoking than a picture of a key. I feel like there is a secret sauce in creating a fairytale and I feel like I have learned more about the recipe this week.

I have never cared much for mothersday. I mostly did my daughter-job because it was expected of me and I didn’t want drama, and that was that.

When Aleksander was born - 4 years ago, he showed me what kids are really like and also showed me how truly broken my own relationship with my own mother was. My mother was there when he was born, and for a little moment we connected like we have connected when I was born - I think. And I somehow knew: when she lets go of my hand, we will both let go of each-other.

Which we did. Those 4 years became years of epic lows, filled with many griefs. A loss of the fantasy: ‘if I work hard enough she will love me in the way that I desire to be loved’. These lows, in hindsight, were necessary because they created space to actually feel. In those ‘mothersdays’ I avoided instagram like the plague, because I finally understood what I had missed. Slowly though, I felt a new feeling as-well. Light as a feather at first, but the more I progressed the more intense it became: family love. A new emotion. A new color on the rainbow. Fresh, pure, deeply frightening, but so so so so needed.

With the birth of Louise in September, I marked the end of those 4 years of incredible emotional labour. I didn’t have my mother there this time (we seemed to have had our end-game fight, at 36 weeks pregnancy. I suspected that I’d never see her again), but with a new set of people, selected by my better understood emotions.

When Louise was born, I was re-born for the second time as-well. This time as a mother who didn’t have her heart in a lock. When I needed to go to the hospital because of a hemmorage, I decided to call my own mother. In that frightening moment, I didn’t care about all the fights anymore. I wanted to smell her smell. She instantly jumped in the car and when we saw eachother: unexpectedly met again. Like when Aleksander was born. Like when I was born. But this time, with my open heart. A new person. She stood next to my bed, guardian mode. And counted the little fingers and toes of the beautiful Louise with me. I learned there, that despite the horrid things that can happen. (Chosen) family - is the most important thing there is.

The kids atelier of yesterday crossed my mind multiple times today. There was this girl. She made me think of that book; 'Woman Who Run With Wolves' - I felt like she embodied that book. This wild female nature that we carry all inside of us, but which most woman have neatly cemented a couple of walls around. This girl didn't have that wall and when allowed, she went all out with the paint. She painted herself, grabbed the old paper cups that weren't used by the other kids anymore and squeezed all the paint from them. She curiously eyed all the different colors of paint dripping everywhere and smeared it over het arms. Eventually she pulled out her sweater and filled her pockets with fat blobs of paint.

I just sat on the ground next to her and followed her exploration with curiosity. It was there that I felt my own walls and felt the cramp of them. I had never even though of the possibility of putting blobs of paint in my pocket. But for this girl it just seemed like the beginning.

I felt like there was a story hidden in there somewhere. And today I catch myself still puzzling with it, but also meeting the limits of my own imagination - my walls, again. I feel like the girl opened a little door to a wild world, but I'm not flexible enough to pass through.

I'll put this puzzle piece in my inner archive of curious things, and I'll look forward to the next kids atelier. I also applied for a subsidy, to make the price go down. We'll see!

I still often feel like I accidentally stumbled upon this life. A life with two kids who are very happy to be here (which turns out to be contagious as heck). A big man that I like, who keeps doing these random things for me and doesn’t ask (that many) questions. A home, a real home that seems to be ok with me staying. And this desire to create - my life elixer that I sometimes a tad furiously gobble. These days fill me from head to toes and I hope that I can have thousands upon thousands of them more. Which is really quite something for me to type, because I have mostly have experienced life as a steep and wet hill that I was climbing with slippery shoes. Turns out though, that I actually was shuffling towards something. I’m very happy that I kept moving.

1. Creating together with @lydiaelisabethpottery (also the start of my curiosity for the turning wheel)
2. Filming for the Awakening collection on the dijk. Johan steered the drone, while standing in an angle, keeping baby Louise out of the harsh winds. Lydia her dad was taking care if Job (her son) and Aleksander who were free roaming. I love this moment.
3. Pluisje and Olaf are growing older, which I find hard. Pluisje has been declining rapidly lately.
4. Creating together with my unit (he is in a drawing spree, he takes a sketchbook everywhere and I cant describe how that makes my creator heart do happy boinks)
5. Prepping a background for the shoot with @lisannejagerphotography and @joyce_khanou in where we photographed me with my 7 months old Louise.
6. Which resulted in sweet sweet precious images that I love.
7. The next day I shared that goodness with a couple friends, who I felt also deserved a photo like that
8. The turningwheel adventure continues with @onthebrinkofclay at the zen monk teacher @kleistudio_reduzum
9. Le good art
10.Putting the final hand to the Awakening collection (which almost sold out within a day!)

I asked Lydia to build them big, because handpinched pots are often a bit smaller, since your thumb does a lot of the heavy lifting in shaping it (people with longer thumbs create bigger cups more easily).

This photo was taken at the atelier today, where
@lydiaelisabethpottery and me put all the works together and photographed them. We then divided the items between us, so that we can showcase a selection each on our sites. It felt a bit weird seeing the items being separated, I wonder why. I think there is a bit of an attachment to this collection. To this story. They are more than physical objects for me, they carry the reeds, that epic wind and endless views of the dijk. Fresh crisp winter air, first warm sunshine of spring, the silence underneath the crisp flutters of leafs on the trees… and the birds that live their life. Like these coots, momma coot on her nest. Dad coot collecting twigs. A moment that I spotted while I was walking with my own family, back to my own nest.

And cmon it’s a well made collection. CMON. One of those collections that will be hard to top. I’m very happy that @lydiaelisabethpottery came up with it!

The sun shows herself more and more, little green leaves unfold from pointy branches. The sparrows grow more round each day, they have conversations outside our window.

I love this painting. Each brushstroke is free and carries the scene. None too much, none too may, sometimes you create one of those. When I see her standing in my atelier I nod everytime. Can’t really explain it. It took me a long while to be able to paint like this.

At the moment I still feel very much like one with Louise. I’m deeply grateful that, 6 months postpartum, I can still exist a little in this kind of in-between world in my head. Not in that hazy, almost drunken way right after birth, but just enough that I feel generally very content.

And Louise too, she carries that same sense of contentment. And something deeply feminine. Something I now realize I was missing.
Postpartum months feel filled with an intense duality for me. I am a multi layered person, but in these times it magnifies.

On the first day post-partum, I was love drunk, marveling at the tiny toes of this little (not so little) girl I had just birthed. On the other side, I was washing bloody handprints off my body in a sterile bathroom.

In those first weeks, I felt so deep in the layers of life that I almost experienced a kind of clairvoyance. I somehow sensed souls hovering, waiting to be born. And at the same time, I had to relearn how to sleep, because my body went into panic every time I drifted off, ever since the ambulance ride after my hemorrhage.
And then… my doula came, during the worst panic attack of my life, and made me a simple warm drink. Oat milk, chamomile, valerian. That became the turning point. That’s where I learned to sleep again.

In those first months, I felt a peace I had never known before. Real peace. And support. I learned to care for myself, with warmth, with food, with herbs like lady’s mantle and nettle.
And still, in the evenings, anxiety would knock on my door. The realization that life isn’t endless. That I am not immortal, even though I’d love to be. It was the first time that truly landed. But in the morning I woke up with warmth and peace in my body. A reset. I wondered if a post partum depression would come, like it did with Aleksander.

But it didn’t. It fucking didnt.

And slowly, the evening anxiety softened too (only returns when I’ve been a bit too ambitious).

And here we are. Still a little in-between, but less like the drunk first months.
On one side, I’m still very bamboozled.
And on the other, I simply am. I create. I am a mother.

It all starts with one stripe ❤️

Finishing up the Vrije Vogel course as we speak. Many many hours of testing, filming and editing have gone into her the past months and it feels like.. a legacy thing? She now exists, I can build upon her further and show and teach how I like to draw, in the way that I’ve developed in all the years since I’ve been drawing.

Weirdly, now that Ive really puzzled out how it is that I actually work, I can create bigger paintings now quite easily. Which is an unexpected nice gift? Iiii like it. Ok end of random thought dump, I need to edit around 1.5 more hours of footage and then she’s complete!

Something that I’ve struggled with in painting is knowing ‘when to stop’. I tended to go on and on and by doing so, somewhere losing the big picture in the process.
When I started painting on ceramics, it became way more clear when a painting was finished. Simply because when I’d add on too much layers, the glaze would start to bubble in the kiln. Plus, with pink paint (which turns blue in the kiln) you cant exactly see what youre doing anyway, so I let perfection go and just gave it a good shot.

After practicing this for a couple years now, I made a watercolor painting for my drawing course, yesterday. Totally forgetting about my initial struggle, I just simply applied the process of what I do on the ceramics. And all of a sudden it hit me - I finally know when to stop! I finally know how to paint in the way that I want on paper. And I accidentally got here.
