Create your very own dinnerware!

Starting at December 2024, Christina from Crooked Garden will offer you the option to bake your ceramic works in her professional pottery kiln, to really make your items ready to be used into your daily life!

We have space for 5 participants of the online course, each month. This means that you need to have purchased this online course to make use of this service.

Spots available in February 2025: 5 spots left

I (Christina) have thought long and hard if I want to offer my professional kiln for a baking service, because it's an expensive piece of equipment that needs to be used by care. It's the womb of ceramics, ceramics get born through the kiln!
I do understand that most people don't have the money to buy a kiln themselves, while they would love to create their own dinnerware. So I've thought of a solution to make sure that what enters the kiln is safe, to keep my kiln safe!

That's why, when you purchase a spot for the baking service, this will include a clay package with everything that you need for the course. I do this to ensure that no unknown materials enter the kiln.

A spot for the bake service costs €175,-

Book your spot by mailing to:

workshop@crooked-garden.com

What do you buy when you buy a spot:
- A clay package send to you that consists out of everything you need for the course (value approx. €100,-). We do this to ensure that no unknown materials enter the kiln. This will include one bag of clay (natural or black) of 10kg, a small sculpting wheel, wooden tools, a box of underglazes and two pots of real glaze. So you are really good to go.

- One bisque fire (which will take 24 hours and reach a top temperature of 1060 degrees Celcius) and one glaze fire (which will take 24 hours and reach a top temperature of 1240 degrees Celcius). Both take place in a time that is conventient for you. When you purchase a spot in December, that doesn't mean that your works have to be ready in December. You may clay at your own pace.

Do note:
- The total of your works can't exceed the size of 60 height and 40 cm width. These are the size measurments of the inside of the kiln.

- You need to travel to our location in Groningen a total of 4 times. To bring your items (safely wrapped in bubble plastic or a blanket) to the kiln, then pick them up and bring them back home to glaze them, then to bring them for their second firing and then to pick them up one final time.
My husband Johan will pick up the biggest part of the logistics for this.

Commonly asked questions:

- I have purchased the online course, but I already have some clay tools at home. Do I still need to purchase the whole package to be able to bake my items?
No, not neccesary! The baking service itself is €75,-. Feel free to email us about this, to ensure that you have the clay and glazes that we approve of (sounds bossy, I now, but again we do this to ensure the safety of the kiln).

- I have purchased the online course + the bake package and have used it. But.. I kind of want to clay and bake some more. Is this possible?
In months where not all spots are filled by first-time-participants, we are open to offering a bake service for €75- in where you get a bisque firing and glaze firing (hence you ofcourse use the approved clay and glazes).

- Do I really need to purchase the online course? I know a lot already and I have clay at home.
Yes you really need to purchase the online course, we do not have space offer a regular baking service in that regards. Maybe ask a bigger studio!

- Why is baking so expensive?
Well.. Ceramics are kind-of expensive. A kiln bakes for 24 hours to complete one cycle and is fired to 1060 or even 1240 degrees Celcius! This needs some energy to complete. We also pay rent for the location that houses the kiln.
